心得
這一台 Netgear WNR3500L 評測過程相當長,從拿到 sample 機到評測報告出爐,將近一個月的時間,雖然這段時間雜務較多,但是 WNR3500L 像是魔術師的高筒帽,一會變出 Tomato, 一會又變出 DD-WRT,再伸手一刷又是另外一個驚奇。由官方主動參與支持的開放社群及眾多第三方韌體的支援,造就 WNR3500L 天生反骨的性格,如此開放硬體平台的特性已在國外受到廣大網友的喜愛,網友終於可以光明正大的刷用第三方韌體,不必再擔心原廠保固問題。此外,網路效能實測結果與 ASUS RT-N16 互有領先,特別是在 WLAN to LAN 項目有大幅度的領先,證明 Netgear 在這部份有下過功夫。實測結果雖不若同門師兄弟 WNDR3700 般被冠上地球最強 AP 的稱號,但 WNR3500L 俱備開放硬體平台的特性,在國外受歡迎的程度更勝於WNDR3700。
在 網通產業的山寨傳奇 一文作者曾經提到:提供第三方韌體的網通產品有一定市場存在。這句話筆者已深深地感受到,相信國內網通大廠應該也能明白。這幾年 SoC 技術日新月異,網路硬體廠商為求快速商品佈局,大多依照 SoC 廠商提供的公版電路來製造生產,使得各家產品彼此的差異日趨模糊,因此商業競爭的結果往往只剩下價格上的廝殺。換個角度來看,因使用開放源碼或廣泛支持第三方韌體的網路產品,其實就是一種差異化,這個差異化可以為網路硬體廠商從網路社群中直接或間接得到利益,無論是更多的產品銷售,或者是使用者自成的產品粉絲團,持續的對硬體產品提供改善意見回饋,同時創造出網路硬體廠商、網友及開放社群三贏的局面。這樣的模式,我們在 Netgear WNR3500L 及 MyOpenRouter 的合作模式裡已經得到印證,國內網通大廠亦可以取為借鏡。
